As you know, the MOPAR and Cummins parts networks have deleted the replacement fuel transfer pump for the '03-'04.5 engines from their inventories.
The offical factory replacement requires you to install the transfer pump inside the truck fuel tank. Pump price is $300. Add in the labor to remove the fuel tank and install the module; $400. Issue 56, April '07 of the Turbo Diesel Register has the details. At that time, the only plug-and-play option was a part number FP943 that was offered by Delphi at a retail price of about $450.
Since that time we have found that the FP943 transfer pump is made by one source. The same source that made the pump for MOPAR and Cummins; Carter Division of Federal-Mogul. We can only imagine their surprise when MOPAR and Cummins stopped their collective purchasing from Carter. Lots of extra inventory?
Perhaps so. That part is now in the aftermarket showing up in a brown Delphi box and in a white Fel-Pro box. We've closely inspected the pump and its contents. They are the same kit.
More good news ... the price has substantially dropped. How about less than $200? So, '03-'04.5 owners, it is time to purchase a spare. Be ready for the inevitable!
NOTE: Fuel pump has one year warranty from date of purchase. Installation of pump requires the included filter/strainer to validate warranty.
