Description
The tensioner is a spring-loaded pulley designed to keep the serpentine belt tensioned on the pulleys. Over time the tensioner spring can weaken or break allowing the serpentine belt to come loose.The GATES 38285 replacement tensioner assembly for '03-'23 Dodge Cummins Turbo Diesel trucks with 5.9L or 6.7L engines ensures that the serpentine belt stays tight.
NOTE: For trucks with air-conditioning.

Well-built tensioner, consider a longer bolt

This Gates 38285 tensioner is well-built, better than the Dayco tensioner that it replaced. The Gates tensioner uses a larger bearing and a metal pulley rather than plastic. It is about 5.5 mm thicker (0.22") at the mounting flange than the Dayco tensioner. The Dayco tensioner may be OE (not sure on that). Due to the increased thickness, a 10mm x 1.5 thread x 90 mm length bolt was more appropriate than the OE bolt. This new bolt is 10mm longer than the OE bolt. Look for a bolt rated to Grade 9.8 or higher. Don't forget a thick flat washer if you're not using a flange bolt.
It has only been installed for less than 10 miles.
